An upstate New York man has finally received the medals he earned for his bravery on a Vietnamese river more than 40 years ago.
Robert Kruckmeyer's Army unit was returning from a night patrol 41 years ago this month when his lieutenant was shot in the chest by a sniper as they crossed a river in South Vietnam's A Shau (A' shaw) Valley.
Kruckmeyer pulled the wounded officer from the river then dove back into the river to retrieve the officer's rifle.
